Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' score from 0 to 100 for how strong a site's backlink profile is. It looks at how many unique sites link to yours and how strong those sites are themselves.
The scale is logarithmic, so going from DR 10 to 20 is a lot easier than going from 70 to 80. Google doesn't use DR, it's Ahrefs' own metric, but it's a decent proxy for how much a link from a given site is worth.
It depends on who you compare against. A new SaaS sitting under DR 10 is normal, and the big launch platforms like Product Hunt are in the 90s.
The useful comparison is with the sites that rank for the keywords you want. If they're all around DR 30 and you're at 8, you know roughly how much link building is between you and them.
Get links from sites with a higher DR than yours, from as many different domains as you can. Ten links from ten sites count for more than ten links from one.
Directories are the easiest place to start, because you can submit yourself and you don't need anyone to reply to an email. I've been submitting my products since February and my DR went from 19 to 22. Slow, but those links stay, and it's the one SEO task you can just sit down and do.
After that it's the usual: guest posts, open source projects people link to, free tools (like this one), and content good enough that other people cite it.
Domain Authority (DA) is Moz's version of the same idea, a 0-100 score built from Moz's own link index. The two usually move in the same direction but rarely match, since each company crawls the web differently.
Pick one and track it over time. Comparing your Ahrefs DR with a competitor's Moz DA tells you nothing.
